Experience Korean documentary season at Sheffield’s Showroom Cinema

This April, the Showroom Cinema will bring contemporary Korean documentary to Sheffield, England, showcasing the breadth of films that are currently emerging in the Korean documentary market.

Viewers will experience modern Korea through the lens of six captivating stories that explore diverse topics from cats to football, and from North Korean politics to LGBTQ+ parenting.

Follow the evolution of Seoul’s queer spaces with ‘Home Ground’, watch football supporters struggle for nine long years to create a new football club in Anyang, South Korea, through the lens of ‘FC Sukhavati’, and witness the lasting impact the Korean War has had on several generations with ‘Defectors’.

These stories of kindness, passion, family histories, communities, hope, and resilience will help you better understand this fascinating nation and will shed light on a lesser-known side to South Korea.

With several screenings featuring in-person Q&A’s with the directors, viewers are granted a unique opportunity to delve even deeper into these awe-inspiring documentaries.

Tuesday 16 April:

  • Home Ground/홈그라운드: In the mid-1990s, the first openly lesbian bar in South Korea, LesBos, opened its doors in Sinchon, Seoul. This documentary follows the evolution of the city’s queer spaces through the eyes of the bar’s proprietors. F Rated. Time: 18.30

  • Coming to you/너에게 가는 길: Two mother’s defy both personal and societal biases as they embrace their children’s coming out journeys, rallying support for Korea’s LGBTAIQ+ community through their own activism. F Rated. Time: 20.30

Wednesday 17 April:

  • Cats Apartment/고양이들의 아파트: A tale of love, care and human-animal interaction as an abandoned, soon to be demolished apartment complex, becomes home to a thriving colony of cats. F Rated. Time: 18.00

Friday 19 April:

  • FC Sukhavati/수카바티 + Q&A: With humour, care, and a deep sense of love, the film tells the tale of abandoned football supporters and their nine-year struggle to create a new football club in Anyang, South Korea. Not yet rated by the BBFC. Time: 17.30

Saturday 20 April:

  • Fanatic/성덕 + Q&A: In this entertaining and thought-provoking film, a former self-declared fan delves into the incredible world of K-pop fandom and what happens when a fan falls out of love with their idol. F Rated. Time: 17.30

Sunday 21 April:

  • Defectors + Q&A: Defectors explores the lasting impact of the Korean War while revealing the weight it continues to exert on several generations of the filmmaker’s own family. F Rated. Time: 15.30
