Exploring the Hidden Gems of Korea's Jazz Scene

Are you, like me, feeling a bit tired of the bustling nightlife in Hongdae, Itaewon, and Gangnam? Or perhaps you're weary of spending late nights at cafes, sipping overpriced drinks and indulging in cakes? If so, I’d love to introduce you to something truly special: the vibrant jazz scene in Korea.

SEOB’s Jazz & Cocktail bar.

Having visited a variety of jazz bars, each with its own unique atmosphere, I can confidently say there's something for every taste. Personally, I’m drawn to the intimate, tranquil settings that exude warmth and charm, but whether you're seeking lively energy or a more relaxed vibe, there’s a perfect spot waiting for you.

Here are two jazz bars that I particularly enjoy, each offering its own distinctive atmosphere. SEOB’s has quickly become a personal favourite of mine, and I’m confident you’ll find something to appreciate at either one. In addition to these, I’ve also included a few other notable spots worth exploring.

The stage at SEOB’s.

This charming bar is tucked away in Yeonnam, nestled behind a cozy tonkatsu restaurant. The intimate, serene atmosphere has quickly become a personal favourite—honestly, it’s the kind of place I’d love to keep all to myself! The owner, a remarkably talented pianist, also boasts a soothing, captivating voice. I have to admit, I was completely enchanted as soon as he began to sing—perhaps that's a bit too personal, but it’s true.

I had the opportunity to speak with the owner, Seob, who studied music abroad and developed a profound appreciation for the genre’s rich history and its emotional power. Inspired by legendary figures like Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and Chet Baker, he infuses a timeless elegance into the atmosphere of his venue. For Seob, jazz is more than just music; it’s a way of life. He is captivated by its improvisational spirit and its embrace of spontaneity and freedom, reflecting a life of authenticity, creativity, and openness to new possibilities. He also shared that being on stage makes him feel truly alive.

A selection of drinks and snacks at SEOB’s.

The bar hosts evening shows at 7 pm on Thursday to Sundays, featuring an impressive lineup of talented artists for each evening. But, if you’re looking for something a bit more intimate, I highly recommend the 4 pm Saturday solo performance by the owner himself. And just to add a bit of extra charm, the owner’s cat makes an appearance at every show, becoming a beloved guest.

As for the menu, there's a great selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, along with an array of tasty finger foods.

Whether you're enjoying a drink or simply soaking in the atmosphere, be sure to check out Seob’s; the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the rich, mellow vibes. Bookings can be made through NAVER or through IG.

Another spot nestled in the heart of Yeonnam, this lively jazz bar offers a mix of jazz styles throughout the week. I had the pleasure of visiting during the Christmas season, and the festive atmosphere only added to the magic of the experience. The cozy yet vibrant space is perfect for both casual hangouts and special evenings out, with a lively energy that draws you in from the moment you walk through the door.
